Here we go again I thought to myself!  It was Sunday about 12 noon, It was only the beginning, only  30 minutes passed and the race literally just started.  I had to seriously talk to my exhausted self and tell myself that this was just another obstacle I had to conquer, no matter what.      “DON’T OPEN YOUR EYES OR YOUR MOUTH “ screamed   100’s of sideline spectators and in an instant, “I was totally submerged with  my head deep under the murkey  Swamp water for 45 seconds,” which actually felt like 5 minutes.  HAHHH I gasped for my breath as I popped my head and sore neck from under the thick soupy water and came out the other side of the wooden panel above. Weeew I made it I thought, I went under  the overhead 10 foot barrracade plywood wall above.  Victory!    One by one like soldiers the SPARTAN RACERS all came out ok, We sloshed our tired freezing bodies through the muddy moat below us bear climbing up the slick trail ahead .  For every 2 people  who made it up the hill,  5  slipped  backward into the water again despite  several  attempts  to escape the sludgey pool.  The next trail before us was a steeper elevation than the prior.  My calves burned like fire as I  stumbled sloppily through the uneven terrain of  what looked like a mix of weeds atop of a mound of  soft uncooked brownie cake mix.   I knew then that even the pro mountain climber and trail runners next to me would not be able to easily ascend this trail.  This was was just the beginning.  Guess what surprise was waiting for us atop of the mini mountain.  Not even an elite soldier would laugh at that.

JUST KEEP ON GOING- ONWARD!

When was this course going to FINISH already?  It was only 12:35 PM the hot sun beating down on my neck and my mind was starting to wander,  and my focus was wavering into a fog.  I was already complaining after only 60 minutes in.  To my left a 57 year old male pushing forward  like a gorilla warrior, his eyes peered like lasers  on the next target ahead as he blew by me just like in the story of the fox and the tortoise.  That moment,  I felt humbled and realized that this was a mind game.  That 57 year old man gave me a quick subliminal lesson as ‘ I heard his muffled voice whisper to me  mumbling to himself just 2 more minutes. JUST GET TO THE NEXT ARROW ON THE TRAIL.  We had at LEAST,  2 more HOURS of this self inflicted torture. What did he mean by 2 more minutes?  I suppose I would only know at the FINISH LINE.  That’s what the SPARTAN (obstacle race) was all about- determination to get it done no matter what!
