Do You Have a Meniscus Tear?

The meniscus is the piece of cartilage in the knee that stabilizes and cushions the joint. It is what helps protect your bones from wear and tear. The meniscus can get torn if the knee is twisted enough. And in some instances, a portion of the torn cartilage comes loose and gets stuck in the knee joint, causing it to lock up.

The most common activity that causes meniscus tears are sports that involve jumping, turning, pivoting and contact. They can also happen in conjunction with another knee injury such as an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Older athletes are at a special risk for these tears due to the meniscus weakening with age. In fact, over 40 percent of individuals over 65 have them.

Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear

Signs that you may have a meniscus tear include:

  • Knee pain
  • Sensing a “pop” or “popping” of your knee
  • Your knee sometimes locks up or gets stuck
  • Swelling
  • Hard to bend or straighten your leg

In the beginning, your knee pain may not be too bad. You may even simply play or work through the injury. However, when the swelling and inflammation comes on, you will likely feel much more pain.

Torn Meniscus Tear Treatment at All Care Physical Therapy Brooklyn

We can treat your meniscus tear and depending on your condition, help you get back to your daily functions without having to resort to surgery. First, we will perform a thorough evaluation to determine your condition and create a treatment plan that is best for you.

Some of the things we evaluate may include:

  • Learning all the details about your condition
  • Measuring the range of motion of your knee
  • Performing a gait analysis
  • Determining the strength of your knee, hip and ankle
  • Assessing your balance
  • Functional mobility assessment
  • Other special tests for your knee

Our goal is to get to the root of your pain. Often the pain is not coming from the structure of your knee, but from the nerve. We can determine where its coming from and create a treatment plan best for you to help you become pain free. Physical therapy for a torn meniscus can help give more function and range of motion to your knee while decreasing the pain and swelling.
